Gronk & Mojo Pitch

Rob Gronkowski has also officially retired from the NFL. It was thought, by most, that this was a possibility, especially after the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl. Gronk also talked about retirement after last year’s Super Bowl. It is a real possibility he could turn his attention to WWE, since he has expressed interest in the business in the past.

He also has a good buddy at WWE in Mojo Rawley. It can’t be forgotten that he made an appearance at WrestleMania 33, helping Mojo win the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal. Since he has already had so many prior injuries in Football, even if he threw himself into WWE full force, he may only stick around until 37 or 38 years old at most (it also can’t hurt that he has more money than he knows what to do with).

His first storyline could be that he forms a Tag Team with Mojo Rawley and they win the Tag Team Titles. This would also be a perfect scenario for Mojo’s career as he has become lost in the shuffle for quite some time now. Right now, he is doing promo’s that are pretty funny to watch when as he yells at himself in a mirror.

Triple H Fancy Mic Work & Women Rise to Headline

The women finally get an official opportunity to headline WrestleMania. Many people thought this should be the main event, and it makes perfect sense for Vince McMahon to place Ronda Rousey in this situation because she is arguably his biggest star, other than Brock Lesnar. That whole “beat the clock challenge” last night made no real sense at all. Ronda hit the nail on the head with that one, it is absolutely a BS gimmick. I love WWE and wouldn’t trade it for the world, but I don’t think anyone is a fan of beat the clock challenges (those can probably be done away with).

I couldn’t be happier for Finn Balor on earning an Intercontinental Championship match versus Bobby Lashley at WrestleMania. See my post in The Business of WWE on this match.

Ricochet and Aleister Black definitely deserve a Raw Tag Team Championship match at WrestleMania; they beat The Revival in a non-title match on Raw last night.

The situation with Apollo Crews is somewhat tricky, because he may hit his stride in a year or two in which he gains enough momentum to win some Championships. WWE will have to capitalize on this rather quickly because I have a feeling it may not last very long. He is just such a great athlete, truly a one-of-a-kind, and it would be a huge let down to see him walk away from the company without ever winning any Titles, but that scenario is foreseeable.

Triple H did some excellent work last night on the mic (there was an absolutely hilarious moment when he was quoting the 1996 song “Wannabe” by the Spice Girls). There was a more serious moment where he put his career on the line at WrestleMania, but I’m not too worried, Triple H’s career is safe considering that he is the COO.

Lastly, good luck to Dean Ambrose in whatever he endeavors to do if he does in fact leave WWE, whether he enters some other wrestling organization or decides to pursue another path in life.

Side Note: I’m still holding out hope for an Angle vs. Cena match at ’Mania, as it would be a major draw. I’m officially ruling out the possibility of The Undertaker appearing in a match at WrestleMania. He still may make an appearance, but it won’t be in a match (this is not a fact by any means). He is simply getting older to perform at a level that is acceptable to him. Let’s face it too, The Undertaker’s entrance is what fans really want to see anyway, so he can make a small appearance for five or even ten minutes, sending fans home happy.

The 2019 Intercontinental Championship Scene & Predictions

Before Monday Night Raw airs this week, the Intercontinental Championship scene deserves mentioning. Right now, the situation surrounding that Title is going through a rough patch, but the Intercontinental Championship always tends to gain prominence right after WrestleMania, particularly in recent years.

I am not exactly sure who will have the distinct honor of holding that Title, but the situation surrounding it fluctuates a lot, and doesn’t always entirely depend on who holds it. This might be a sign that Bobby Lashley is not necessarily the man best positioned to hold this Championship. He still may be poised to one day win the Championship, but he may not be a great holder of it (maybe a Greek God is a little too much for the Intercontinental Title).

Personally, I would have Finn Balor win it back and defend it at WrestleMania, then go on to hold it for several more months, losing it perhaps at SummerSlam or even holding it until October or so. Finn has more than proven that he both can, and deserves, the opportunity to have an extended run with a Title in the WWE. If anyone doesn’t believe me, look at what he did to elevate the NXT Championship back in 2015 – 16 when he held the Title for 292 days (officially recognized as 293).

A potential booking strategy for the situation surrounding the Intercontinental Championship in the interim leading up to ‘Mania is for the relationship between Lashley and Lio Rush to become contentious (Vince can get creative in terms of exactly how this transpires), leading to a match between the two for the Title. Rush somehow miraculously wins it from Lashley and holds it for less than a week until WrestleMania, where he ends up losing it to Balor, which would give Balor a proper coronation.

The Beautiful History of Daniel Bryan

Daniel Bryan is one of the most influential and inspirational people in the wrestling/sports entertainment industry today. This recognition spans from his days in the independent scene and Japan to his career with WWE. He has fought through countless head injuries over the years and is an excellent role model to us all when it comes to not giving up on your dreams and maintaining the fire within through thick and thin.

Daniel Bryan first decided he wanted to pursue wrestling when he was a sophomore in high school. He decided to train at Dean Malenko’s wrestling school in Florida, but it closed down by the time he graduated in 1999. He instead enrolled in Shawn Michaels’ wrestling school at the Texas Wrestling Academy (TWA) and subsequently debuted later in 1999.

He then toured Japan with Lance Cade as a tag team under Frontier Martial Arts Wrestling. Daniel Bryan (real name Bryan Danielson) was signed to his first WWF (World Wrestling Federation) contract in 2000, albeit a developmental deal, and was assigned to Memphis Championship Wrestling (MCW), where he worked with William Regal. He is still very close with to this day to him and credits him for being extremely influential throughout his career.

Bryan developed his moniker “American Dragon” during this short stint. After 18 months, he was released in July 2001. He revealed in his 2015 autobiography that he was close to being called up to the main roster in the 2001 Royal Rumble match and being used in the new cruiserweight division inspired by WCW. He went on to make a few non-contracted appearances for the company in 2002 and 2003, and subsequently would not make another appearance in WWE for over five years. Bryan wrestled for New Japan Pro-Wrestling after his release from the WWF, as he worked on his American Dragon persona.

In 2002, Daniel Bryan joined Ring of Honor, which was just starting at the time. He was instrumental in helping the company get off the ground, as evidenced by the fact that he competed in the main event at ROH’s debut event on February 22, 2002 and is considered one of the company’s “Founding Fathers.”

In 2005 he became frustrated with ROH and the industry in general because, despite the fact that he was having success, he had not yet won the ROH World Championship. Bryan ended up quitting the company, although fans believe it was due to the storyline because he still had dates booked elsewhere. He ended up winning the ROH World Championship in September 2005. At the beginning of 2006 there was an inter-promotional feud between Bryan (he went by his real name with ROH) with Chris Hero (Kassius Ohno) of Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW). Bryan held the Championship until the end of the year in 2006 with 39 defenses.

He then stepped away for a while to heal a shoulder injury. He signed with WWE in 2009 after a successful few years post-injury, and he wrestled his final match for the company against Nigel McGuinness who at the time was also wrestling his final match with Ring of Honor. Bryan competed in many other promotions across the United States, Europe, and Japan. There are so many I won’t include them all, but I have developed a great respect for his dedication to what he does, and it truly cannot be overstated how admirable that is for any profession.

Bryan made his official televised debut for WWE on the inaugural episode of NXT with his mentor being The Miz. He was let go from WWE for being too violent during the attacks by The Nexus. WWE apologized to him for his release and incorporated it into a storyline. Fortunately, after returning to the independent scene for a couple months, he was signed again by WWE in August 2010 after being released just a couple months earlier. He already had some dates booked though, so for a short time he was wrestling for WWE and a few independent promotions. Bryan returned to WWE at SummerSlam and won the United States Championship from The Miz in September. The storyline he had with The Bella Twins is funny in hindsight because Brie is now his wife.

Daniel Bryan then earned a spot in Booker T’s “Fav Five” and won the SmackDown Money in the Bank ladder match in July 2011, which led to him cashing in the contract in December at TLC to become the World Heavyweight Champion. Booker T had him match at WrestleMania XVIII against Royal Rumble winner Sheamus, which he lost in 18 seconds.

After failing to regain the title, he went on to engage in a feud with CM Punk in which they put on some fantastic wrestling performances. Bryan then went on to have issues with Kane which ultimately led to them attending anger management therapy with Dr. Shelby, forming “Team Hell No,” and winning the Tag Team Championships, subsequently holding them until after WrestleMania and losing them to The Shield.

Bryan also developed a great friendship with Kane during this time. The Yes! Movement then begin, with Bryan receiving overwhelming support despite Vince McMahon not seeing him as a top superstar and deciding to push Randy Orton as the face of the company. The WWE universe also completely rejected the returning Batista. Daniel Bryan was originally scheduled to face Sheamus at WrestleMania XXX in about a 10-minute match, and he ended up having two matches against Triple H and then against Randy Orton and Batista, ultimately winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

After holding the title for a little over a month, Bryan had to undergo a cervical foraminotomy procedure to decompress a nerve in his neck. He returned to WWE for the Royal Rumble in 2015 but unfortunately left again in May because doctors were not sure about the health of his head. He officially had to retire in February 2016, and he became the general manager of SmackDown Live in July, doing that for a couple of years.

Bryan finally made his return to the ring at WrestleMania 34 in a tag match with Shane McMahon against Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. He stayed in the same character for several months to get the WWE universe re-acclimated to him before turning heel right before Survivor Series 2018 and winning the WWE Championship, ending AJ Styles’ year-long reign.

He then began introducing himself as “The New Daniel Bryan” and recruiting Rowan, an old Wyatt Family acquaintance, to be his protector. This leads us to where we are today, with Kofi Kingston about to challenge for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania.

Vince McMahon Genius & Charlotte Flair Shines

Vince McMahon, being the genius that he is, also could have booked this situation exactly the way he did, by having the other two members of The New Day earn a spot in a WWE Championship match for Kofi by winning a Tag Team gauntlet match (brilliant move to have The Usos forfeit out of respect) because of their history with The New Day.

It was also a beautiful thing to watch when Charlotte Flair won the SmackDown Women’s Championship, officially giving her eight Women’s Title reigns which breaks a tie with Trish Stratus. Her next stop is WrestleMania where she will compete for the Raw Women’s Championship. If she does win, she will become the first woman to ever hold both Raw and SmackDown Women’s Championships at the same time. It’s incredibly smart on WWE’s part to capitalize on the talent of Charlotte Flair. An athlete like this only comes around maybe once in a lifetime (maybe even once every other lifetime). She may even have a chance to break her father’s record, and now John Cena’s record too, of 16 World Titles because she has several more years in her WWE career (as Bon Jovi says, she’s “Livin’ On a Prayer”).

The last thing I will discuss is how strange it is seeing The Miz work as a face because he has not ever truly done that, so in all honesty I don’t know how good he is going to be. My first instinct after seeing him this week is that he will be at the very least, decent. One might think he would know how to do this pretty well because he is able to play on the other side of this situation so masterfully.

Kofi Kingston Pre-WrestleMania Booking Proposal

Before SmackDown Live begins this week, a Kofi Kingston pre-WrestleMania booking proposal is in order (not that Vince has to listen to it, or see it, or even be aware of its existence).

Vince could tell Kofi that he has one more opportunity to earn a WWE Championship match at WrestleMania, but this time he would have to beat one of his fellow New Day members and if the other New Day member who he wrestles (or entertains with, because I know WWE likes the term sports entertainment as opposed wrestling) loses, then he is fired.

Personally, I would choose Xavier Woods to be the main to get fired, leaving Big E to be the middleman. This would also plant the seeds for dissension to erupt with the New Day, leading to the group splitting. Vince may have to go back on his original plan to have the New Day break the Dudley Boys record of nine Tag Team Title reigns with WWE.

Gargano & Cole Intrigue

On NXT, one additional element that makes the Johnny Gargano vs. Adam Cole rivalry so intriguing is that the two men have never had a match on NXT TV.

Ricochet and Aleister Black could also be in for two matches on WrestleMania weekend, facing the War Raiders at Takeover: New York (presumably losing) and possibly winning the Raw Tag Team Championships from The Revival and immediately being called up to the main roster.

On a supplemental note, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if, in about a year, Kacy Catanzaro is regarded as a huge babyface, given the way crowds are already responding to her based on what they’ve seen from her in her American Ninja Warrior days. She still needs to prove herself with WWE, however.
